USA 3 (Buddle 4, 31; Gomez 90) - Australia 1 (Cahill 19)
Those calling for a more attacking style from the Socceroos will be feeling less than enthused this morning after Australia was exposed defensively in a 3-1 defeat to the USA in an overnight friendly. Repeatedly caught out in the air at the back and with their offside trap repeatedly broken by the quick US strike force Australia looked out of its depth at times. The only bright spot for the Aussies was a goal from Tim Cahill and the fact they dominated possession and territory in the second half. However, the team were not rewarded for their efforts because of some brutally poor finishing by Josh Kennedy.
Things had seemingly been falling into place for Australia in recent days with key injuries to potential group rivals and an improved 1-0 win over Denmark. However, the defensive frailties seen in this game will have been noted by their group opponents and a similar performance against Germany in Durban would result in a heavy defeat.
