A New Dawn

After four years of waiting the greatest sporting show on earth returns – kicking off at midnight tonight (Australian time) with hosts South Africa taking on Mexico. Let’s hope there are plenty of goals and magic moments throughout the tournament.

Personally I like Brazil ($6) to win it all. I think it is mad to bet outside the ‘core’ countries of Brazil, Argentina, Germany, and Italy who have won 12 of the 14 tournaments held since 1954. Out of those Germany ($16) and Italy ($18) look to be weaker than previous years and Argentina ($8) has the maniac personality of Maradona to deal with as Coach. That leaves me with the obvious of backing Brazil to take the trophy. I expect them to play the glamour boys from Spain ($5) in the final. For an absolute bolter of a dark horse I like Uruguay ($120).

For the opening matches tonight I like Mexico to defeat South Africa and am hoping that Uruguay can step it up to France and eke out a draw. My suggested investments for the opening night would be to back Mexico to defeat South Africa 2-1 (massive odds at $13 I reckon!), and to invest on Diego Forlan (Uruguay) to score the first goal in the Uruguay-France game ($8).
